Pushing Daisies Picks Up Creative Arts Emmy Awards

After suffering a heartbreaking cancellation, ABC’s fairytale series “Pushing Daisies” won two golden trophies Saturday at the “Creative Arts Emmy Awards.” The award show proceeds the Primetime Emmy Awards and honors all of the behind-the-scenes artists who make television happen, such as the hair and costume folks and even guest stars.

And like its bigger, more notable sister, the “Creative Arts Emmy Awards” take place at the Nokia Theatre in Los Angeles. The show will air Friday on E!

But back to “Pushing Daisies,” a sweet little series which followed a man named Ned (Lee Pace), who could kill and resurrect the dead with just one touch. Despite being eliminated earlier this year, the program still managed to nab Emmys for Outstanding Makeup for a Single-Camera Series (non-prosthetic) and another for Outstanding Art Direction for a Single-Camera Series.

Tony award winning actress Kristin Chenoweth, who played Olive on the show, has also been nominated for an Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series Emmy. Fans will find out if she wins when the “61st Primetime Emmy Awards” air Sept. 20 on CBS. Chenoweth is competing against the likes of Vanessa Williams (ABC’s “Ugly Betty”) and Elizabeth Perkins (Showtime’s “Weeds”) in the category.

Another winner of note is Fox’s now canceled “MADtv,” which won an Emmy for Outstanding Makeup for a Single-Camera Series (non prosthetic). The comedy show aired for 14 seasons before coming to an end earlier this year.

“I didn’t really make a speech,” said a visibly moved Jennifer Aspinall, “MADtv” head makeup artist. “I thought we’d lose.”

Meanwhile, Oscar winning actress and Detroit native Ellen Burstyn won an Emmy for Outstanding Guest Actress in a Drama Series for her role on NBC’s “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit.” This was her first Emmy win.

“As you get older, you appreciate awards more,” Burstyn, 76, told reporters backstage. “I wanted an Emmy to complete my set.”
